Periodontal treatment is multi-step process that requires significant patient involvement and cooperation among various dental specialists. The procedures we offer at Charme Clinique are tailored to each patient’s needs, health status, and the stage of the disease.
An important and usually first step of treatment is the hygiene phase: the removal of dental plaque, which is the bacterial buildup that accumulates near the gumline and is a primary cause of periodontal disease. Hygiene treatment involves professional cleaning of teeth from tartar and plaque deposits (scaling, air polishing, and polishing) performed in the office. In the case of severe tooth sensitivity, these procedures are carried out under anesthesia.
It’s equally important to establish correct oral hygiene habits. Without the patient’s involvement in proper, daily home care, halting the disease is impossible. Therefore, every patient receives oral hygiene instructions, they are taught how to brush their teeth properly and which products to use to effectively remove plaque.
The periodontist focuses on eliminating inflammation, which may require pharmaceutical treatment with topical or oral medications. Additionally, cooperation with other dental specialists may be necessary, depending on the disease’s progression and the condition of the patient’s oral health. The treatment plan may include:
- Cavity treatment (as caries can be an additional source of infection)
- Root canal treatment
- Use of surgical techniques for cleaning and regenerating periodontal tissues
These procedures can involve using the patient’s own bone or specialized materials that stimulate bone growth, or bone substitute materials and custom membranes. Periodontal surgery allows partial restoration of damaged tissues, re-establishing tooth stability and, depending on the stage of the disease, preventing tooth loss.
- Prosthetic/implant treatment
For patients with periodontitis, replacing any lost teeth is essential. The disease causes loosening and weakening of the teeth, which makes them unable to bear the additional stress resulting from the absence of another tooth. To prevent this, when a tooth is lost due to periodontitis or other factors, we include prosthetic or implant therapy in the treatment plan.
